Contribution of journalism in shaping the state of affairs is controversial if we stop having a love affair with the field of journalism. Freedom of speech and expression symbolizing democracy is often sighted as a shield when journalism is cornered with legal restrictions. In a country like India with its heterogeneous nature, often the issues are treated like billion bubbles.
The need for governance and empowerment is one of the reasons behind Journalism. Governance with the help of journalism rest on the ethics an individual possesses, governed with social responsibilities and a sense of commitment with real people. Transition from the traditional to the contemporary form of journalism reflects the compromise on the selection of news and myopic consumerism presents dearth of responsible journalists and media houses. Waiting for an incident to report is lazy presentation of news supported with journalistic tools. Unearthing facts brings a sense of justice but proactive journalism seems to be missing in a cluttered environment of news. I wonder how one decides what customer wants when the only rule to abide with is change.
As a journalist, we all need to work towards preventing a crisis affecting people. Discussing poverty and social injustice in India by media houses is a fad. Criticizing government at their failures is news and forgetting the subject is explained as professionally moving on with life. Issues of Killing for Honor in Haryana, Uttar Pradesh are a blot to the media houses who claim to be extensively covering the geography. Flood of Kosi in Bihar became news but the present development of displaced people does not have news coverage to provide solutions. Pakistan terrorism becomes news but the life of a normal citizen in Pakistan is not news, it’s known! A search for something new is only an element of Journalism.
